Gary E. Erdmann Sr. passed away Monday July 4, 2022, at his home. He was 81.

He was born in Long Island, NY and grew up in Paterson, NJ. After marrying, Gary moved to Lake Hiawatha and resided there for over 55 years.

Gary served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from 1961 until being honorably discharged in 1965. He served with the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing “The Dragon Ladies” during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also served in Vietnam. During the Cuban Missile Crisis his air recon unit was directly responsible for flying over Cuba and processing clear photographic evidence that the former Soviet Union was building and assembling ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States.

Gary was a recipient of 6 medals for his service, including a Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Medal. The award he is most proud of was a unit citation award from President Kennedy and a letter from the white house – thanking them for their service and the excellent photographs during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The citation stated Gary’s unit “contributed as much to the safety of the United States as any unit in our history and any group of men in our country.”

He is predeceased by his late wife: Ann E. (nee-Perry) who passed away on 10/27/2015 and his brother: Eugene.

Gary was a Past Commander with VFW 10184 in Parsippany. A life member of the American Legion Post 249 in Lake Hiawatha and a member of the Military Order of the Cootie of the United States.

Survivors include his son: Gary Jr. and his wife Susan; his daughters: Janet Erdmann; Briana Hoffman and her husband Kyle; his granddaughter Morgan Fezza and her husband Matthew; his brothers: Warren & James and his wife Patty; his sisters: Rosemary Ferralasco, Eileen Casbarro and her husband Bruce; Leslie Loforese and her husband Bob; Robin Capozza and her husband Joe, his grandchildren: Kayla, Kimberley, Kyle, and Dani, and his great granddaughter: Maisy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service 9:30am Saturday July 9, 2022 at the Par-Troy Funeral Home 95 Parsippany Road Parsippany (973) 887-3235. Interment: Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at the funeral home.
