Obituaries » Larry F. Dietz

Larry Dietz passed away peacefully on June 30, 2022, at Arden Courts of Whippany. He was 85.

Larry was a lifelong NJ resident, born in Newark in August 1936 and raised in Denville. After graduating from Boonton High School, he attended Stevens Institute of Technology and earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1958. He was also the proud captain of the Stevens golf team and a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

In 1959, he entered the Army National Guard, earning the Expert Rifleman Award in June of that year. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

Larry married his wife Ellen and moved to Parsippany where they happily raised their two children, Todd and Dawn.

For 40 years, he worked at Picatinny Arsenal, beginning as Project Engineer, to Systems Engineer, and finally to Configuration Management Engineer. His numerous projects included explosive warhead devices and fielding major Army weapon systems, most notably the TOW Missile, the Towed Howitzer, and the Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer.

Larry was an avid golfer with a single digit handicap and was most proud of his hole-in-one at the age of 75. He was also an accomplished skier who cherished his many ski trips throughout Europe. A lifelong Yankee fan, he also enjoyed fishing, reading, and his frequent lunches with his best friend, Barrie.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Dietz and Edith Bodine Dietz, and his sister, Doris Jacobus.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Ellen (nee-Figueiredo); his son, Todd Dietz, and his wife, Robin Dietz; his daughter, Dawn Dietz, and her significant other, Robert Docherty. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, extended family members, friends, and neighbors.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Par-Troy Funeral Home, 95 Parsippany Road, Parsippany. His funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 10:00am at St. Christopher’s Church, 1050 Littleton Road, Parsippany, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association would be greatly appreciated.
