David J. Nelson Sr. passed away on Thursday, February 8th 2018 in Warwick, New York. He was 74.

David was born in Queens, New York and grew up in Montville before moving to Boonton Township in 1979.

He proudly served in the United States Army assigned to Honor Guard Company of the 3rd United States Infantry, The Old Guard, Fort Myer, VA and then during the Vietnam War from September 14, 1964 until being honorably discharged on June 18, 1967.

David worked for Honeywell International in Morris Plains for 35 years as an Engineer in Research and Development on various projects such as laser applications related to medical devices and aerospace before retiring in 2003.

He was a dedicated member of many different associations and organizations. Some of them include National Synthetic Crystal Growth Society, Professional Ski Instructors of America, National Ski Patrol for 39 years serving in various positions such as Craigmeur Patrol Director, Hidden Valley Patrol Director, NJ Central Section Chief, NJ Region Director, Ski & Toboggan Instructor-Trainer, Outdoor Emergency Care Instructor-Trainer, Awards Advisor, Eastern Division Memorial Scholarship Fund Coordinator, NJ Region Bd. of Dir., Eastern Division Bd of Dir and was Co-Founder of the Eastern Division Patriot Star; having been awarded National Appointment #6578, two Yellow Merit Stars, The Patriot Star, The Meritorious Service Award, and the Distinguished Service Award himself. He had also been invited into the Eastern Division Dinosaurs Club.
He was also a member of The Old Guard Association (TOGA) as Life Member and former President; Model A Ford Club of NJ; Mustang Club, former Board Member of both Morristown Federal Credit Union and also the Morristown Chapter of the American Red Cross. Mr. Nelson also devoted many years to the Boy Scouts of America as Eagle Scout Advisor and Advisor for several merit badges; to the Township of Boonton as member of the Board of Adjustment, to Morris County as a volunteer to the Court Arbitration Committee, and Boonton Elks Lodge 1405.

He was devoted to his family providing unwavering love and equally to all he served, and in turn, he was loved and respected by all whose lives were mutually touched. Survivors include his wife, Joyce (nee-Szipszky); his sons: David J. Jr. and Jarrod, both of Boonton Township; his sister, Jane Foster of Delaware; his nephew, Tim Foster, his niece, Kelly Maxwell; and his granddaughters, Kathleen and Allyson.

Dave (my Husby), ski forever in peace and until we are all together again, ‘cause in our hearts you will live forever.

Your Loving Wife, Joyce (Missy), your proud Sons, David and Jarrod, granddaughters Kathleen and Allyson, and all other family and friends who are all grateful to have been close to you …. Here on this earth you are deeply missed. Rest high on the mountain with that beautiful setting sun.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 15th 2018 at the Rockaway Valley United Methodist Church. 38 Valley Road, Boonton Township, NJ 07005.
