Kenneth George Sonner, 83, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Haven Hospice in Orange Park, Florida.

He was born on January 18, 1934 in Jersey City, NJ and raised in North Arlington, NJ where he attended Queen of Peace Catholic High School. After graduating in 1953, he was accepted to Norwich University. During his college years he played football for Norwich, was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, and learned how to fly, which became his passion throughout the rest of his life.

After graduating in 1957, he continued his military career reaching the rank of Captain in the United States Army and continued his passion; flying both planes and helicopters. After leaving the Army, he spent more than 30 years flying as a Captain for TWA; flying a variety of aircraft around the world. His proudest moments were flying the troops home from Desert Shield and Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Civilian Desert Shield and Desert Storm medal from the Department of the Air Force.

After retiring in 1998, he continued to fly for pleasure in his own plane. The culmination of his flying career occurred in 2006 when he received the prestigious Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” Award. An honor only achieved by a very small percent of pilots. He was also a member of the Quiet Birdmen and the St. John’s Mason Lodge #1 in Mountain Lakes, NJ.

Ken was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Norma Benaquista Sonner.

He is survived by three daughters; Sharon Muller and her husband Guy, of York, PA; Sandra McGrath of Orange Park, Fl; and Susan Disser of Brownsburg, IN. He is survived by six grandsons; Brad Muller, Matthew Muller, Ryan Muller, Sean McGrath, Derek Disser, and Blake Disser. He also has a great-grandson; Forrest McGrath. He is survived by one brother, Robert Sonner and his wife Barbara of Piscataway, NJ.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from Par-Troy Funeral Home, with the Liturgy of Christian Burial to be offered at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle RC Church, 179 Baldwin Rd., Parsippany. Entombment: Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Ken’s memory can be made to the Haven Hospice, 741 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL 32065.
