He was born in Orange, NJ to John George Houghton and Genevieve Pesko Houghton on February 20, 1954. Later the family moved to Parsippany, where John resided his entire life.

John graduated from Parsippany Hills High School in 1972 and attended County College of Morris. His lifetime love of flying led him to obtain his private pilot license. He went on to instruct others at Certified Flyers in Morristown, NJ. John later obtained his airline transport license and enjoyed working as copilot on corporate jets. His family has great memories of being treated to flights to see NYC at night.

John worked for UPS for over 30 years, before retiring in 2016. He volunteered for the Parsippany Ambulance Squad from 1977 to 1980 and was a ski patrol member at the former Craigmeur Ski Area in Rockaway Twp., NJ for several years.

John was an avid gardener and successfully grew palm trees and tropicals in the north Jersey climate. He was a wonderful cook and baker, known for his delicious pies and breads. His great sense of humor was present, even through his difficult illness. John was also an animal lover, and over the years had rescued many cats and kittens, nurturing many back to health.

John will be remembered as a thoughtful, kind friend and neighbor, a loving brother, and a sweet uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister, Shelly M. Laurie and her husband, John; his brother, Christopher S. Houghton and his wife Jennifer, both of Warren, Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews: Tara Casey, John T. Laurie, Jenine R. Jenkins, Ryan Houghton, Ian Houghton, Aaron Houghton, Meredith Houghton, and Camden Houghton. He is also survived by his 13 great nieces and nephews. Lastly, by his precious kitties.
