Obituaries » Kevin F. McIvor

Kevin F. McIvor, age 64 years, died peacefully on October 21, 2020 at his home in Whippany, NJ. Born in Mt. Vernon, NY on September 13, 1956, Kevin was the son of Josephine and John B. McIvor, both who predeceased him.  As a special needs’ child, he grew up in a family of love and caring.  Kevin attended JFK Center, NYC, Special Ed programs in Mt. Vernon, NY and Pearl River, NY and received his First Communion and Confirmation at Sacred Heart Church, Mount Vernon, NY.

Kevin lived with his parents in Mount Vernon, NY; Pearl River, NY; then Whippany, NJ where he worked at Employment Horizons, a sheltered workshop in Whippany.  At the age of forty-four Kevin moved into the House of the Five Friends, a very special independent house in Whippany.  He joined four other “Friends” who became his extended family. Kevin, with the other Friends, participated in Special Olympics, bowled, took enriching trips to NYC and Disney World along with many other special activities.  Kevin also attended the Center for Enriching Abilities and, in the summers, Camp Jaycee.

He enjoyed his life and gave a wonderful example to all.

With declining health and until Kevin’s time of death, he was continually and lovingly cared for by the excellent staff at Five Friends under the direction of house managers Karen and Joe Harris.

The McIvor family, with grateful hearts and the utmost sincerity, thank the very special staff at Five Friends for their kindness and loving care for Kevin over the past twenty years and, more recently, the Atlantic Hospice staff for their palliative care. The family also extends a most sincere thank you to Neeta Das, an expert consultant and ally to the Five Friends and their families.

Kevin is survived by his three brothers, Bill (Ceil) of SC, John (Carole) of CT, and Patrick (Judy) of PA along with many very special nieces and nephews and a large extended Murphy-McIvor family. Kevin will be greatly missed by his housemates Pam, Michele, Bobby, and the incredible staff at Five Friends.

A family burial will be private and a Mass of Celebration of Kevin’s life will be held at a later date to be announced.  Should you like to make a financial donation in remembrance of Kevin, kindly make it to “Five Friends LLC.” 178 Bee Meadow Pkwy Whippany, NJ 07981. Those funds will be used to create a memorial at the House to honor Kevin.
