Ruthann Cavallo nee Hickey, of Sparta, NJ, passed peacefully in her home on May 7, 2020, at the age of 70. Ruthann’s devoted husband, Anthony Cavallo, was by her side.
Ruthann was born in 1949 to the late John Hickey and the late Ruth Hickey nee Nippes. She married her love, Anthony Cavallo, on November 7, 1990 at Chapel of the Fountain in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to her husband, Anthony, Ruthann is survived by her sister, Maureen Hefferon and her husband, John, of Brick, NJ, her brother Thomas Hickey and his wife, Diane, of Parsippany, NJ, and her sister Victoria Hickey and her husband Paul Yurga, of Mesa, AZ. Ruthann is also survived by two nieces, two nephews, 3 great nieces and 1 great-nephew.
Ruthann, lovingly known as Sam to those closest to her, grew up in Newark, NJ. She attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic School and Barringer High School, both in Newark. Ruthann worked for NJ Bell, which eventually became Verizon, during her entire career. She held different office positions over the years and worked in various North Jersey locations before retiring. Ruthann and Anthony moved to Sparta in 1988. They were both drawn to the beautiful mountains and lakes of Sussex county and enjoyed being part of the Sparta community.
In her free time, Sam enjoyed traveling, dining out, watching the New Jersey Devils play hockey and watching Dancing with the Stars. Throughout her life, Sam visited many resort areas such as Hawaii, California, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and St Maarten and also went on 3 Caribbean cruises. Her farthest trip was a trip to Italy with her husband and her church, St. Kateri Tekakwitha of Sparta, to attend the canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha, who was canonized on October 21, 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI.
Sam’s favorite places to visit were the Jersey shore and Las Vegas. She always looked forward to her annual trips to Wildwood Crest and Atlantic City. However, Sam’s most frequent vacation destination was Las Vegas. Sam and Tony traveled to Las Vegas over 30 times and even had their wedding in a beautiful chapel there.
Ruthann will be missed by those who loved her and will be remembered as a calm, patient, quiet, gentle soul.
