Obituaries » Irene Fortunato

Irene Fortunato, age 95, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2019.

Irene was born in Newark, NJ to Philomena and Antonio Fortunato in 1924. After moving from Newark, Irene lived in Union and then settled in Whippany.

She was a very independent, proud “Jersey Girl” and would not think of living anywhere but her beloved state.

In retirement, Irene was an active woman who volunteered at Morristown Medical Center for over 20 years. She received many accolades for her unrivaled contribution of 29,000 volunteer hours at Morristown General hospital. Irene was the recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her volunteerism and commitment to her community.

Two years ago she moved to Brookdale, Florham Park Assisted Living until her passing. A very special thanks to Brookdale, who loved her like family for the last two years of her life. Brookdale’s commitment and caring as well as the love and devotion of her best friend, Donna Mannino, kept Irene happy, young and strong in her final years.

Irene was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph, Joseph, Daniel and Anthony as well as her sisters Mary Lovallo, and Clementina (Minnie) Sciarrillo.

She is survived by her sisters, Viola Toribio, Linda Cato and her brother, Thomas Fortunato as well as 17 nieces and nephews, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Liturgy of Christian Burial to be offered at 10:00a.m. on Tuesday, September 17th 2019 at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Chapel. 90 Whippany Road, Whippany. Interment: Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Visiting hours are on Monday, September 16th 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00p.m. at Par-Troy Funeral Home. 95 Parsippany Road, Parsippany.
