Joseph E. Booker Jr. passed away on Monday, March 4,2019. A private service for the family will be held Friday, March 8th 2019 at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, NJ.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marie Booker and son Joseph Booker III.
He is survived by wife Janice Carlisle Booker and his three sons, George Booker (Ellen) of Parsippany, NJ, John Booker (Patricia) of Mesa, AZ, and Jarrod Booker (Luxia) of Valley Stream, NY and by six grandchildren, Maxwell, Jasmine, John, Rickie, Amber, Preston.
Born on May 24, 1932 in New Jersey his family moved to Virginia where he graduated from Robert R. Morton High School in Farmville, VA before moving to New York. Joe began his career at the Chemical Bank New York Trust Co., at Lenox Ave. and 125th St. in 1951 after graduating from the American Institute of Banking in New York. He started at the Bank as a teller trainee. In 1958 he was advanced to utility clerk, to chief clerk in March of 1960, in 1961 to assistant manager, finally ascending to the position of Bank Vice President. Joe was one of the first African Americans to hold such a position.
