Everett Joseph Sooy passed away on Sunday, January 6th 2019 after a long illness at Saint Clare’s Hospital in Denville. He was 81.
Joe was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic, NJ in March 1937 to Everett and Agnes (nee-Flynn) Sooy and was raised in Belleville, NJ before moving to Rainbow Lakes in Parsippany in 1973.
He graduated from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark in 1954. After working with his father in his automotive shop, he then joined the United States Army where he proudly served his country from 1956 until being honorably discharged in 1962.
Joe began his career as a police officer in 1964 with the Belleville Police Department. During this time, he went on to graduate from William Paterson University in 1976 with his Bachelor of Science in Public Safety. He dedicated 29 years to serving the people and the town of Belleville before retiring in 1993 with the rank of Sergeant.
Joe was a member of PBA Local 28 and The Retired Police Local 600.
He was the ultimate hockey fan especially the N.Y. Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens. He also loved football, in particular Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys. He had the uncanny ability to watch multiple things at once on the television and loved comedy, especially Mel Brooks movies. He loved to travel and visited the Baltics, the UK and Ireland, the Caribbean and many of the National Parks in the US and Canada.
Survivors includes his beloved wife, Carole (nee-Peterson); his sons and daughters-in-law: Erick & Rebecca of Parsippany & Kevin & Veronica of Bernardsville; his daughter, Karen of Edinburgh, Scotland; his granddaughters: Sara Sooy of Bound Brook & Sabrina Sooy of Bernardsville; his cousins: Kathleen Debold, Michael Flynn, Patricia Flynn and the late Therese Burke and his nephews: John and Jeffrey Stout and his niece, Meredith Strack.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 11:00a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the Par-Troy Funeral Home. 95 Parsippany Road, Parsippany. (973)887-3235. Cremation: Private. Visitation will be on Thursday Evening, January 10, 2019 from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to The Michael J.
