Eldon B. Priestley, age 75, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Clara Burke Subacute Nursing Home, in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
Eldon was born in Trochu, Alberta, Canada. He married Fern J. Sharp in 1961 in Calgary, Alberta. Eldon studied chemistry at the University of Alberta. In 1965, Fern and Eldon moved to Pasadena, California, where Eldon continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, obtaining his PhD in physical chemistry in 1969. They then moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where Eldon did postdoctoral work at Harvard University in solid state physics. In 1971, they moved to Princeton, NJ, where Eldon joined RCA’s David Sarnoff Research Laboratory. He was an inventor of the first commercially viable liquid crystal display. He subsequently joined Exxon Research & Engineering, where he spent the rest of his career. He took on roles of increasing responsibility, working in Linden, NJ, Baytown, TX, and Baton Rouge, LA. In 1993, Fern and Eldon returned to NJ and settled in Mendham. In 2010, they moved to Morristown. The final years of Eldon’s career were spent as senior director and site head of the ExxonMobil Research & Engineering Technology Center in Annandale, NJ. He retired from ExxonMobil in 2006.
Eldon was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was an active member of his church.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Fern (nee-Sharp) on 8/12/2018 and his half-brother, Ralph Priestley on 8/15/1992.
Survivors include his sons: Scott and his wife Jennifer, and Brian and his wife Laura; his four cherished grandchildren: Diana, Carolyn, Benjamin, and Lyla Rae; his sister, Shirley Mundorf and her husband, Roy; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Par-Troy Funeral Home, 95 Parsippany Road, Parsippany, NJ. 973 – 887 – 3235 or visit www.partroyfuneralhome.com. Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Morristown. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
