Dorothy H. (nee-Hearn) Whitmore, age 92, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, July 9, 2018 at her home at Heath Village in Hackettstown, N.J.
She was born in North Hudson, N.Y. She lived in Morris Plains and Summit, and relocated to Parsippany in 1951 before moving to Hackettstown in 2001.
Dorothy attended MacMurray College. She enjoyed a 27-year career with Bell Atlantic, starting as a clerk and retiring in 1991 as a forecasting engineer and project coordinator. She was proud to design and oversee the construction of her family’s new home in 1965.
She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers, a former trustee of the Rainbow Lakes Community Club, and a volunteer in schools in Hackettstown, Washington Township and Parsippany. She volunteered as a “Pen Pal” with preschool students from 2002-2017 at Heath Village.
Dorothy expressed her creativity and spirit of adventure throughout her life.
She cared deeply about people, animals, the earth and current events. She was a great friend and neighbor, and was loved by many for her wonderful sense of humor, her kindness, her honesty and her welcoming smile.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husbands Edward Egan and Joseph Whitmore, and by her sister, Ruth Fitterer. Survivors include her son, E. Patrick Egan; her daughters: Nancy Egan, Linda Egan, Barbara Egan (Margaret), and Gail E. DeRiggi (Emil) her stepdaughters: Elizabeth W. Winch (Harlan), Theresa W. Musaid, and Josephine W. Beam; her sister, Carol May (Jim), 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dorothy’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 6, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. at the Heath Village Heritage Room, 430 Schooley’s Mountain Rd., Hackettstown.
