Obituaries » Horst Berger
Horst Berger, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 24, 2018 at Claremont Center in Point Pleasant, NJ. He was surrounded by the love of his family in the days leading to his passing and comforted by his exceptional caretakers. He was born on January 8, 1942 in Wanne-Eickel Germany to Christian and Margarete (Jakubzik) Berger.
Horst came to the United States with his family in 1955, settling in Brooklyn, NY. A teenager at the time, he adjusted quickly and desired to learn all he could about this new land. He soon mastered the New York subway system and endless adventures ensued including many exciting trips to Coney Island with his sister Gabriele. His interest in electronics led him to study at the RCA Institute and he continued his work as an electronics technician while proudly serving the US Army. Later he worked for Aircraft Radio Corp in Boonton, NJ while earning his private pilot’s license. His passion for repairing radios, televisions and more inspired him to start his own business: Solid State Communications. Horst also had a zest for life and found happiness in nearly everything and everybody. Whether watching a beautiful sunset in his beloved Ocean City, MD, traveling the globe and polka dancing with his wife Florence, playing with his grandchildren, or just talking with friends, family or a kind stranger, Horst was a truly happy man. His sweet, exuberant smile and infectious laugh were his hallmark with which he blessed us until his final hours. Horst, Dad and Opa will lovingly remain in our hearts and memories. A very special thank you to every aide, nurse, health professional, clergy, friend, neighbor and everyone else who helped Horst navigate his way through life after his strokes, especially Ms. Elvira Johnson.
Horst leaves behind his son Mark Berger and his wife Kristie of Lincoln Park; his daughter Patricia Letson, her husband Thomas and their sons Maxwell and Tyler of Keyport; his stepson Michael Maier of Giessen, Germany; his stepson Stanley Pilipie and his wife Colleen of Parsippany; his sister Gabriele Sanders of Mohrsville, PA; his five cherished grandchildren: Katie, Nicole, Adam, Eric and Jena Hreha and her husband Brad; his two treasured great-grandchildren: Madison and Brielle Hreha; as well his nieces, cousins and a wonderful extended family. Horst was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Florence Elise (Mirkowicz); his devoted parents; and his stepson Michael Pilipie.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Chapel Service on September 8th, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Restland Memorial Park, 77 Deforest Ave, East Hanover, NJ. Interment of ashes to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Par-Troy Funeral Home, 95 Parsippany Road, Parsippany, 973-887-3235 or www.partroyfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org.
