Obituaries » Frank J. Coyle Jr.

Frank J. Coyle, Jr. went to his heavenly home on Friday, August 3rd 2018 . He was 87 years old.

Frank Coyle was born on March 7, 1931, the son of Rose and Frank Coyle, in Jersey City, N.J. Frank married Yvette Shalhoub of Bayonne in 1959 and they moved to Whippany in the summer of 1963. Truly this was a marriage made in heaven. After retirement, Frank and his wife, Yvette enjoyed spending their winter months vacationing at their condo in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Frank graduated with honors from St. Peter’s Preparatory School, Jersey City in 1948. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Peter’s College in 1952, where he was again an honors graduate. During Frank’s academic years, he won numerous public speaking awards and was most proud when he successfully competed with thousands of students from all over the country in the Annual Hearst Oratorical Contest, representing St. Peter’s Prep and the State of New Jersey.

Frank wore the grey mailman’s uniform for 8 years, walking the streets of Jersey City delivering mail, before becoming an attorney. It was here, he met people from all walks of life and decided he wanted to enter the legal profession and serve the people.

Frank was awarded a Bachelor of Law Degree from Fordham University Law School. The same university later conferred a Doctor of Law Degree upon him in 1968. He was admitted to practice law not only in the courts of the State of New Jersey but also in the United States District Court and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

Frank began to practice law in 1956; however, his career as an attorney was interrupted by a 2-year period of military service in the United States Army where he served as a Specialist in the Intelligence Branch.

When he resumed his legal career, Frank Coyle became a member of the law firm of Brause, Callaghan & Coyle, which specialized in litigation. In 1977, he founded his own general law practice in Cedar Knolls until his retirement.

Frank was a Charter Member of the Trial Attorneys of New Jersey and held memberships in the New Jersey State Bar Association, Essex County Bar Association, Morris County Bar Association and American Arbitration Association. During his legal career, he was appointed an Arbitrator to arbitrate cases before the courts.

Frank contributed to the community. In the area of politics and community service, Frank Coyle was legal advisor to various civic and political organizations. He served as attorney for the Cedar Knolls Board of Fire Commissioners and on various church and civic committees. He was also an active member of the Whippany Lions Club for many years. Frank held elective office serving as a Committeeman on the governing body of Hanover Township from 1968 -1970. He was appointed to numerous governmental boards and agencies, including the Hanover Township Recreation Committee, Board of Health and Sewerage Authority. Frank also lectured extensively before insurance companies and community organizations on specialized legal topics.

Frank’s friends will remember him mostly for his quick Irish wit and great story telling.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Yvette who passed away on August 31st 2016 and his sister, Rosellen Coyle Gussie who passed away on June 14th 1977.

Survivors include his loving brother, James G. Sr.; and dear nieces and nephews, Frank Gussie, James Coyle Jr., Thomas Gussie, Kathleen Coyle Sirois, Kevin Coyle, Gerry Coyle, Denise Rizkalla and Annie Rizkalla Tweddel and their spouses as well as many cherished great nieces and nephews.
